This affects not only the body\u2019s blood sugar in the long term, but also has an adverse effect on various other organ systems. One of the most crippling ramifications of having diabetes is an eye condition called diabetic retinopathy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy is a health condition that occurs in diabetic people as a result of damage to the retina\u2019s blood vessels. Diabetic retinopathy can develop if a person has type 1 or 2 diabetes and a long history of uncontrolled high blood sugar levels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extent of damage caused to the retina is related to control and duration of diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While a diabetic may start out with only mild vision problems, they can eventually lose their sight.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the stages of Diabetic Retinopathy?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Non-proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NDPR)<\/strong> \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this more common form, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that i<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1032 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/diabetic-retinopathy-blog-image-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/diabetic-retinopathy-blog-image-2.png 940w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/diabetic-retinopathy-blog-image-2-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/diabetic-retinopathy-blog-image-2-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/diabetic-retinopathy-blog-image-2-750x629.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/>s also\u00a0called \u2018early diabetic retinopathy\u2019, the retinal blood vessel walls become weak &amp; swollen.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tiny bulges (microaneurysms) protrude from the vessel walls of the smaller vessels, sometimes leaking fluid and blood into the retina. Larger retinal vessels can begin to dilate as well. NDPR can become severe, d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ue to the congestion of more blood vessels and the nerve fibres in the retina, it may begin to swell. Sometimes the central part of the retina (macula) begins to swell (macular oedema), a condition that requires treatment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If left unattended, NDPR can progress to Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR)<\/strong> \u2013 Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) \u2013 Diabetic retinopathy can progress to this more severe type, known as proliferative diabetic retinopathy where damaged blood vessels close off, causing new, abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is structurally weak, and may rupture causing an outflow of blood <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the centre of the eye (vitreous).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, scar tissue stimulated by the growth of new blood vessels may cause the retina to detach from the back of the eye. If the new blood vessels interfere with the normal flow of fluid out of the eye, pressure may build up in the eyeball. This can damage the nerve that carries images from the eye to the brain (optic nerve), resulting in glaucoma.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>What are the symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of diabetic retinopathy often don\u2019t appear until major damage occurs inside of the eye. Unseen damage can be prevented by keeping blood sugar levels under good control and getting regular eye exams to monitor eye health. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms can include:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeing floaters or dark spots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">objects appear bent or slanting (metamorphosis)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blurred vision<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sudden loss of vision<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty distinguishing colours<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Diagnosis and treatment of DR:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1031 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Diabetic-Retinopathyblog-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Diabetic-Retinopathyblog-image-1.png 940w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Diabetic-Retinopathyblog-image-1-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Diabetic-Retinopathyblog-image-1-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/www.thecapstoneclinic.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Diabetic-Retinopathyblog-image-1-750x629.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A doctor can diagnose diabetic retinopathy by doing a dilated eye exam. This involves the use of eye drops that make the pupils open wide, allowing the doctor to get a good look at the inside of the eye. The doctor will check for: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abnormal blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swelling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaking of the blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocked blood vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scarring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes to the lens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damage to the nerve tissue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retinal detachment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may also perform a fluorescein angiography test. During this test, the doctor will inject a dye into your arm, allowing them to track how the blood flows in the eye.
